5 Back-to-School Campaigns to Engage Students and Families

Back-to-school season gives local businesses a chance to connect with families as routines and spending habits change.

Parents plan to spend an average of $557 per child during the 2026 back-to-school season. With 78% of shoppers expecting higher prices, promotions that provide value can help your business stand out.

Here are five campaigns your business can use to connect with local students and their families.

1. Host a Back-to-School Social

Partner with a local school to host an event with food, games, giveaways or family activities. It is a great way to bring students and families together while introducing more people to your business.

2. Start a Reading Rewards Club

Many kids who grew up in the ’90s remember Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! program. Teachers set reading goals, and students who reached them received certificates redeemable for free Personal Pan Pizzas.

Local businesses can use a similar concept by partnering with schools and rewarding students for reaching their reading goals.

3. Host a School Supply Donation Drive

Invite customers to donate new school supplies for local students. Encourage participation by offering a small discount, free item or giveaway entry, then deliver the supplies to a nearby school or community organization.

4. Recognize a Student of the Month

Celebrate students for achievement, attendance, kindness, leadership or improvement. Feature the selected student on social media and provide a prize, gift card or special reward.

5. Host a School Fundraiser

Partner with a local school, PTO or team and donate a percentage of sales from a designated day or week. The school helps promote the event while your business gains exposure and brings local families through the door.

Stay Connected Throughout the School Year

Although 62% of back-to-school shoppers started buying by early July, opportunities continue after classes begin. School activities, report cards and busy family schedules give businesses plenty of ways to stay involved throughout the year.

Promote your campaign through direct mail, email, social media and digital advertising to reach more families throughout your community.
